Dental crowns

A dental crown will cover any cosmetic imperfections while supporting a damaged tooth and preventing cavities and infection.
You may need a crown if your tooth is:
  • Weak, cracked, or ground down
  • Misshapen
  • Discolored
  • Damaged from a very large cavity
A dental crown coversevery visible part of a tooth, giving the tooth complete protection. If you have a tooth that is severely damaged, a crown can make that tooth look and function perfect again, essentially giving you a new tooth.

Dental crown procedure

Getting a dental crown is generally a two appointment procedure. During the first appointment, your dentist will assess the tooth to ensure that it will support the crown. Depending on the state of the tooth, the dentist will either file the tooth down or fill it in to make it large enough for the crown to properly fit.

Finally, an impression of the tooth will be made and sent away to a dental lab where the permanent crown will be made. You will have a temporary crown in place until your second visit, in which you will receive the permanent crown.
